Two good gay movies
Jan. 19th, 2012 06:59 pmI recently saw two gay-themed movies on Netflix and they were good enough to post about.
I Love You Phillips Morris, staring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Right away I’m like, you either love Jim Carrey or you hate him and I was definitely never a fan. But he was perfect for this role. This movie is mainly a comedy but also just a strange, quirky romance too. Based on a true story, the movie tells us the story of Steven Russell who realizes he’s gay, leaves his fundamentalist wife, lands a boyfriend, decides to live a fabulously wealthy lifestyle, and realizes he can’t afford it. So he becomes a world-class con artist. The movie is irreverent (has something to offend everyone) but hilarious as it chronicles Steven meeting Ewan McGregor’s title character, engineering even more con artist schemes (roasting corporate America in the process), breaking himself and his lover out of prison more than once, and even faking his own death. I love a movie that makes me laugh, and if there’s a gay romance at its center, even better.
The Sum of Us, staring Russell Crowe. Young Russell Crowe was a hottie! This movie is almost 20 years old and is based on a play about an aging father and his adult gay son (Crowe). There’s some cheesy dialog but the caring relationship between the father and son really comes through well. Their relationship at first seems odd – the dad has purchased gay porn for his son! – but as the movie progresses, you realize that the dad is trying to undo a horrible wrong from his past. One bonus for me: the dad kinda reminds me of Jason Flemying (Azazel in X-men) – like if Jason were 10 years older and if this movie were being made now, he would’ve been perfect for it; a lot of the dad’s mannerisms and such bring him to mind.
