Lonely: A Memoir by Emily White – Loneliness is a taboo topic. The author shares that as she wrote this book, about her lifelong struggle with loneliness, it became clear to her that even bringing up the topic was verboten in most circles. I felt that the author did a great job combining her life story with plenty of scientific research on loneliness. She also talks a bit about her coming out but it weaves in well with the book; it doesn't dominate it. The memoir was a bit depressing at times, but still worth a read. Grade: B
Me by Ricky Martin – I listened to this book on audio CD, and as you can probably guess from the title, it is Ricky Martin’s memoir. I have loved this guy for a long time. I love his music (the more upbeat songs – not the ballads), and was thrilled when he came out as gay. So here is his life story. I was never bored and loved hearing about every aspect. I hadn’t known about his charitable work; he has done a ton in the fight against human trafficking and for the rights of children –especially girls – in the developing world. Just one huge disappointment: I can’t believe that the audio book was not read by the author, a fact which is especially perplexing considering that he is an actor in addition to being a singer! Grade: A-
More behind the cut.
