Book Report
Nov. 21st, 2012 12:53 pmLovers by Daniel Arsand – I had such high hopes for this novel, but unfortunately it really fell flat. It’s historical fiction taking place in 18th century France, about two men who fall in love. The story was told with such a feeling of….distance, of removal that I didn’t feel for the characters at all. I loved the setting and the “outline” of the fic, but there was no heart here. Grade: D
Like Me by Chely Wright – I’m not into country music at all, but I had read in “Curve” magazine that a well-known country music singer had come out. So here is her memoir. Despite not being a fan of country, I could not put this book down. Wright might be covering familiar territory – angst about being gay, fear that coming out could end her career and her relationships with family and friends – but her story was still riveting. I get that country music fans are likely more conservative than other segments of the population, but I gotta say it’s a real bummer that such deep prejudice is alive and well. Wright did experience some strong support too though; not everyone was a homophobe. Grade: B+
( For the first time ever, I include a “review” of a book I haven’t actually read – this exciting development is behind the cut! )
