We met with our attorney last week to update our wills and powers of attorney. She said she believes that Illinois will pass marriage equality legislation very soon. She also predicts that DOMA will be overturned this year. It would be wonderful if DOMA is overturned! DOMA prevents the federal government from recognizing any same-sex marriages. Because of DOMA, I pay an extra tax on the domestic partner medical insurance that my company provides Doris, and Doris can’t use our company’s flexible spending account. (Needless to say, my straight married coworkers don’t face this crap because DOMA doesn’t outlaw their marriages, tax them on their spouse’s medical insurance, prohibit their spouses from using their FSAs, etc). There are probably a hundred other negatives to DOMA but those are the two I am most aware of personally. So – I hope this attorney is right and that it will be done away with!

I am continuing on with my plastic-free resolutions . I’ve basically accomplished all my January ones: found a plastic-free substitute for hair conditioner, scheduled myself to go to a winter farmer’s market when it opens next week, requested no straws in restaurants, and found a way to get plastic-free cards. I moved ahead on some of my other months’ goals too: I found a way to replace the facial soap that comes in plastic containers. A little bit of baking soda and water works just fine. A huge challenge will be replacing my hair styling gel. I went ahead and bought a pomade that comes in plastic-free containers, but of course a pomade is not the same as hair styling gel, though its website says it can be used like gel. I tried it today since I have no big plans for today. It goes on like glue. Took quite a bit of 'teasing' of my hair, but my hair now looks okay; in fact maybe it looks pretty much like it normally does. I will try it a second time next weekend (can’t go to work with bad hair!) and see what happens. It may or may not work as a substitute permanently. I will also write to Aveda about their packaging, though I don’t have that goal down until July.

I did one item that's not on my resolution list: When an environmental organization sent me an unsolicited package wrapped in plastic, I contacted them to complain. I mean it would be bad if it was an item I requested, but it was totally unsolicited! And in plastic! And from an environmental group!
