I don’t post much regarding politics anymore. I’m not sure why. Not everyone on my f-list agrees with me politically but I’m okay with that. My friend Laurie and I don’t agree on much politically other than LGBT rights, but I still think she’s cool. Basically I have adopted an ‘agree to disagree’ stance.

But I have to post that I am ecstatic about yesterday’s election results! I stayed up way past my bedtime watching it all on MSNBC. Romney was defeated, Obama getting a second term. Most Republican politicians are just too extreme and I was happy to see that party take a beating yesterday. Pro-marriage equality initiatives won at the polls for the first time ever, Tammy Baldwin will be a US Senator, more women are in the Senate, and - closer to home - Tammy Duckworth beat her odious opponent. I am celebrating.

It was a great day, politically speaking!

Woooo! My whole f'list is celebrating. Well, everyone who's posted since the results came in anyway.

I am SO relieved.

Yesterday was a mess. All I wanted to hear was that Romney wasn't the president. It was so close I was stressed. I just wanted to go to sleep and wake up with the President Obama.

So happy to hear about marriage equality laws being passed or kept, so happy to hear about women rep'ing us in office and asshole being sent back home.

I was so worried. :( but \o/

I couldn't believe beforehand that the polls were so close. But he won! And by a good margin! Yay.

he probably tampered with the polls. That's why he was so convinced he was going to win.

Yay for him being jobless.

I have to agree. When the first returns came back I was honestly in tears and was checking out immigration options. That is how much Romney scared me. I was having to remind myself that the states that were counted first were the ones that Obama never really had a chance to win, and the rest hadn't been counted yet. I'm very relieved by the results, and I'm also glad to see that even in red states there were a lot of Obama votes.

And I hear you on politics and friends. Char went to Jerry Falwell's university and while she agrees with me on LGBT rights and doesn't have Falwell's scary views, we're miles apart on other political issues like abortion. One or two of my other good friends are card carrying tea party republicans with a few exceptions, like LGBT rights again...so when it comes to politics we just don't go there.

That is sad on the friends thing. Looks like we both face it. Part of me thinks that I should go there, try to find out why they have those opinions, see if we can discuss it without getting mad. But just as someone will fail at trying to convince me that we don't need health care reform or that the environment is expendable, I don't think I can convince someone to change their views either.

I pretty much feel the same way. Char and I are able to sit down, have rational discussions about our beliefs and lay out our respective points of view without getting angry -- but at the end of the day, if she believes something and I don't, or vice versa, we're not going to sway each other. She's got her truth and I've got mine. I suppose it helps that we are on the same page with stuff like health care. :) That's pretty much how it is with my other friends with, ahem, diverse political beliefs. My friend Drea and I routinely joke that we're going to give each other copies of political books we'd hate so we'll have kindling for the winter.

To be completely honest, though, I think my tolerance for this would have limits. If I knew someone was prejudiced against the LGBT community or wanted to perpetrate violence against abortion doctors or something, I honestly would want to stay away from them.

I do agree - it makes sense to figure out what your limits are and where you do need to draw the line with someone.

i was very pleased about duckworth (well, ok, plus obama and the marriage equality votes and the idiot rape commenters being defeated). i was surprised to get an email that listed judy biggert as pro-marriage equality. my association with judy biggert is that i get (or, well, got when she was still my rep, but it changed with the redrawing of the districts) letters back from her basically saying thanks for sharing your opinion but i'm totally voting against what you want.

I was very surprised to see Biggert go down!! She wasn't a crazy right-winger. Wow, DuPage County has changed, eh? Never ever thought I'd see a Democrat take that area. So do you think it was due largely to redistricting?

well, the republicans are blaming redistricting. I really don't know, but I was shocked that she was defeated also.

Celebrating right there with you. :D Such a relief to know there are enough people out there to see through the BS that the Republican party was flinging. (Not a perfect metaphor, but you know what I mean. *g*) And, OMG, yay! for all the LGBT rights and women and minorities and... So awesome!

I was just reading about a (D)woman in Maine whose (R)opponents were saying she wasn't electable because she plays WoW. Guess what? She won! Just goes to show how out of touch the Republican Party is with the younger voters. ;)

So, yes, a very good day for America. Four more years! :D

You said it, a very good day for America! I have hope. I am re-energized to get more into politics and current events. I did only a very little bit of phone banking for Obama this time, but I definitely want to do more for the next Presidential race. Incumbents have a big advantage; 1992 was the last time an incumbent president went down.
