Fox made a statement: That the X-Men movies are one continuity. They also made another statement: We are morons.

HAHA! Seriously. How dumb do they think movie-goers are? Furthermore, how dumb do they think movie-goers who are also comic book enthusiasts are? We pick up on the little details. ALL of them.

ETA: That said, the commenters bring up an interesting point: Does it matter? It's not like the comic books are free of continuity errors themselves, what with everyone dying and reincarnating and getting possessed by aliens and diving into parallel universes and what-have-you.

The answer is because Fox is pretending that they're all one continuity, and that's demonstrably bullshit. I was happy to assume that "First Class" was a thing unto itself--a reboot, if you will--and that's fine with me. Telling me it's the same universe? C'mon. Who are you kidding?

And yeah, why not just call XMFC a reboot? Every single fan I know regards it that way. What is with their not wanting to call it that??

I don't get it either, dude. It's like in addition to everything else they've screwed up with the franchise, they're determined to make themselves look EVEN MORE clueless in the eyes of the fan community.
