I know I have a lot to be grateful for but am absolutely devastated at the election result.

I know I haven't commented much on your posts lately, but I know you did a lot of campaigning for Hillary and I just wanted to say thank you for that.

I'm with you on the end result, though I'm trying not to think about it too much at the moment.

Thank you.

I would've done even more if I'd thought Trump had a chance. All along she had this lead in the polls.

Embarrassed to be American and white.

Maybe it's time "polling" wasn't a thing anymore. I almost feel like because the pollsters said she was in the lead, it actually spurned more Drumpf-sters into voting. Does that make any sense?

I also agree with [livejournal.com profile] rhoda_rants about the electoral system, especially since being in California, it means my presidential vote actually counted less than people living in less populated states. It's actually bothered me for quite a long time, now.

Yeah, that electoral college is insane. Same for me, I live in Illinois - we're not a swing state so our votes don't count as much. It's a crazy system,

And good point, perhaps the fact that so many polls had predicted Hillary winning it kept Dems at home and spurred on Trump supporters.

It's more than just being a swing state, though. The electoral college favors less populous states while the larger ones get shafted.

California's population is larger than the smallest 21 states and D.C. combined. However, we only have 55 electoral votes, while the combined total of those smaller states and D.C. is 95. Your state of Illinois is similar, with a population slightly greater than the smallest 12 states and D.C., which have combined electoral votes of 44, while Illinois gets only 20. And, since the electoral numbers are directly related to the number of representatives each state has in the House and Senate, it means that we're under-represented there, too.

There's been a movement from California and now Oregon to exit from the Union. I'm not advocating for that, but I can understand how Californians can feel disenfranchised and unrepresented by the whole debacle because, well, we are.

That so totally sucks! So each Californian is represented way less than people in smaller states. Ugh.

I used to never ever be an advocate of exiting the union but now for the first time I really wish the blue states could withdraw.

Nearly half the smaller states have more say than anyone in California. It's really messed up. So yeah, I understand the urge to secede or leave. I know Americans crashed the Canadian immigration website, but I think I'd move to Mexico. I have lived there as an exchange student once before, I think the cost of living is lower, it's warmer and I'd be able to practice my Spanish! Plus, it'd be a real f-you to the guy who wants to build a wall to keep Mexicans out!

Seriously, though, I don't think withdrawing from the Union is the answer. In fact, I think that because of the results, the country needs the blue states to stand up for all the progress we have made and fight against those elected who might un-do it all.

Hum. Maybe dual citizenship so I could still vote in US elections?

This system needs to change. She WON the popular vote. You know. More actual voters CHOSE her. But because of the electoral college being the way it is, she couldn't win. AGRRRRGGGGHHHH.

Amen. It's a horrible system. The only silver lining I can think of is that maybe Trump will galvanize the left the way (the wonderful, awesome) Obama galvanized the Tea-anderthals.
