Some gratitude (and one sad thing)
Apr. 13th, 2022 05:09 pm- One item about my trip that I didn't mention before. On the return flight, there was no one in the middle seat! (Despite that they said both flights were completely full. I guess someone had a last minute change, and I somehow lucked out that ours was the 1 row not filled).
- Oh wait, one more trip item. Before I left home, I was in the middle of an excellent book. But the book was huge and I didn't want to put it in my already-full carryon. Miracle of miracles, the book was also available electronically from the library, so I just loaded it onto my tablet!! It kept me entertained during the whole flight.
- Going for walks and the spring weather is awesome. Daffodils!! And being able to have the windows open!
- Doris somehow has Friday off! Incredible. It is so rare that she's off. I'm going to surprise her with a trip to the Oak Park River Forest Museum. Not fancy at all but....we need to get out and do some different stuff sometimes. When she's off work, she's either at her mom's or spending all day in the kitchen baking. I love her baking, but we really gotta get out sometimes.
- Another nice Sachin message on Cameo. (He posted to his fan group asking what it's like to use Cameo calls. I answered, and then I sent him more detail in a PM. He replied to my PM!)
- Had a Zoom meeting with the local Dems yesterday. We brainstormed on volunteer activities. It was good. I do feel we're always 10 steps behind the Repubs. It's hard because like no one knows what to do exactly.
And the sad thing....Bitch Media is folding. It's been a part of my life for all of its 26 years. I remember going to the (now-closed) feminist bookstore where the original magazine (which was more like a zine at first) was recommended to me. I'm so sad to see indie magazines continuing to die a slow death. I'd thought that Bitch Media's electronic presence (didn't they have podcasts and a ton of other stuff?) would keep them going. Not to be. Meanwhile Ms magazine looks more like a pamphlet than an actual magazine lately. At least Yes, Veg News, Bookmarks, Communities, Shameless and Herizons are still printing. The last ones standing at this point. (Edit - Bust is still alive too)

Date: 2022-04-14 02:03 am (UTC)And that's awesome about the book! I once was traveling and really wanted to keep listening to an audiobook I had in the car, and I was able to find the ebook version at the library. So at least I could read it. Only bad thing was trying to find the right spot in the audiobook when I got back, ha.
I was swamped all day today so no time to enjoy the weather outside, boo. But yes, earlier had the back door open to get some fresh air in, it was so nice.
Hooray that Doris has Friday off! I hope you get to have a lovely trip to the museum!
Did you ask Sachin if he bumped up his price because of you? lol I wonder how many he's done now
WHatever else is true about the repubs, one thing they have down pat is walking in complete lockstep with each other. Sure, the stuff they're in lockstep about is bizarre and/or insane, but they are all using the same talking points, hammering on the same people, and focused on the same stuff.
I'm sad to hear about Bitch. I just got an urgent plea from Bust too. Digital content is great but hard to monetize. But I did think they'd be able to keep it going with that stuff (or at least keep the digital stuff going). Maybe some of it will end up sticking around? And hey, great that some are still going! I was at one point getting magazines I never subscribed to (O magazine and better homes and gardens, I think). I have no idea why. Eventually they stopped but I imagine it may have been to try to make their readership look larger than it was (so they could sell ad space for more).

Date: 2022-04-14 12:29 pm (UTC)I wish I knew how many Sachin has done too. He has 23 reviews, but of course many of them are mine. :)
Bust! I forgot to mention them in my post. But I don't recall seeing their urgent plea. I would miss them if they go, for sure. Interesting about O magazine and others - I bet those that can afford to do so would do that. I know Ms has struggled since its existence to get enough ad revenue.
