The usual - and some possibly big news
Jan. 24th, 2023 02:20 pm- Less than 4 weeks till my Vancouver trip to see Sachin, if all goes well. (No snowstorms, no COVID, no Sachin getting called out of town for a gig).
- For some reason, I love little things like this. Friday morning, Doris and I left together in her car for my biannual teeth cleaning. She obviously had to stay at work and work a full day. I took the bus home and made it in time for a meeting. I know it's small but I love that we didn't need to take 2 cars, and that the public transit here sometimes works ok. (Sometimes though it doesn't).
- Been cleaning the house a lot. I cleaned out a junk drawer that likely hadn't been cleaned for 10 years or so. It felt good. I know part of why I'm doing this is because of the impending layoffs at my company, the desire to 'take control' over a small thing I can take control of. Still - it felt great.
- Oh, speaking of cleaning? I got confirmation that I made the right decision. Twice a month, a woman named Blanca has been cleaning our house. I made the decision to let her go, since I'm trying to save money with the possible job loss looming. But that wasn't the main reason. Blance doesn't clean very well. Her last day here was Thursday. On Friday, I decided to do some cleaning myself. Crawled around under the bed, moved the nightstand....there were giant, giant gobs of dust bunnies. I knew they were there. At least one person has remarked on the dust and cobwebs in our house, and they are not wrong. Letting Blanca go was the right decision. I can clean the place better myself, and it's not like I don't have the time.
- And now, the big one. I have probably landed another job!! So, long story short. As part of getting ready for the layoffs at my company, I did a lot of things. Updated my resume, made a list of people to reach out to. One of them is Kari who works for a nonprofit that we've teamed up with for nearly 10 years. They had a job opening. We talked. I looked at the posting. We talked again. I want the job, and she said she ran it up the flag pole and said that everyone there loves me and the job is mine if I want it. (!!!!!) She said likely we won't even do an interview, beyond just talking about the logistics of the move. And I got a green light from my boss.
I'm going to take the job. Just to lay it all out, here are the reasons:
1. It is beyond time to do something new. Been in the same company for more than 26 years, the same job for 10 years. My resume is a little blah. Love my team but I am bored
2. It's with a nonprofit, one that helps Americans with their education
3. They have great benefits and they are very flexible with their scheduling. ("Mostly we all take Friday afternoons off unless there's something urgent. If you have a doctor's appointment, no need to take PTO - just go")
4. I love the people there. I know and trust them and the company. The work sounds good and there's lots of room for growth
5. I'd be out of animal agriculture. (I work at the headquarters of a restaurant chain, one that basically sells meat and dairy. Not an awesome fit for a vegan)
6. As I've been kinda looking at other jobs, I gotta say too...nothing much has caught my eye. I fear that due to what I wrote in #1, my opportunities may be way limited. But here is a place that wants me, for a job I want!
7. And I won't know if my current employer will lay me off or not. But if they were gonna, then I'm set. Forecasts show the job market is softening
Reasons not to do it (even though I already decided I am)
1. Pay cut. It's okay though. We'll be fine
2. A lot of disruption when I might not get laid off. But...see above regarding me being at the same company for 26 years.
3. Can't think of another. Just that it's change? Oh and potentially more travel. But I can deal. I believe that with my current role, travel will ramp back up again after April anyway
